JitterTrap is open-source software for network test and measurement. Sunny Beach Labs is the project's steward—we maintain the codebase, guide its direction, and ensure it remains a reliable tool for engineers who depend on it.
What It Does
- Traffic Analysis — Packet timing, throughput, inter-packet gaps
- TCP Analysis — RTT, window size, retransmissions
- Network Impairments — Inject delay, jitter, packet loss
- Triggered Capture — Automatic packet capture on threshold events
What Stewardship Means
Being the upstream maintainer of an open-source project is more than writing code. It means taking responsibility for the project's long-term health:
- Development — Building new features, fixing bugs, improving performance
- Documentation — Writing and maintaining guides, API references, tutorials
- Testing — Developing comprehensive test suites, ensuring releases don't break existing functionality
- Release Process — Managing versioning, changelogs, and stable releases
- Infrastructure — Paying for hosting, CI/CD pipelines, project websites
- Community — Reviewing contributions, responding to issues, guiding technical direction
We do this because JitterTrap is the foundation of our hardware products. Maintaining a healthy open-source project benefits everyone who uses it—including us.

Software vs. Instrument
JitterTrap software by itself is not a complete measurement instrument. The same timing issues you're trying to detect in your system under test can also occur in your measurement setup—background processes, kernel scheduling, network stack contention, and other applications competing for resources can all compromise measurement fidelity.
The JT-10.1 and JT-1.1 are purpose-built appliances where we've done the work to ensure the device is fit for purpose. The operating environment is tuned to eliminate interference from the general-purpose software found in typical Linux distributions. When you need measurements you can trust, the platform matters as much as the software.
